i downloaded a documentary online (yes it is legal, it was not released on dvd, so the author released it in xvid for some reason). the original video is 716mb, 1 hour and 36 minutes, 640x272, 25fps PAL. i want to convert this to ntsc so i can burn a dvd of it. it is very improtant since i cant find this movie anywhere else. i have tried using DIKO and The Film Machine, but both have not worked right. TFM seemed to work fine, but only converted 35 minutes of the film for some reason. DIKO worked, but for some reason it didnt use the whole 4.7gb for dvd, even though i set it that way. the resulting dvd was a little under 2gb, and was obviously very bad quality. is there something i did wrong? i followed the guides on this site, and i set the options how they should be.

is there some other program i should use? i tried tmpgenc, but it was going to take 9 hours even at the fastest setting. all i need to do is convert this file to a ntsc mpg, i dont need a program to author it, as i use adobe encore to author menus anyway. i am very advanced with video, but i have never done any pal to ntsc conversions before

Try AVI2DVD. There is a setting to convert PAL to NTSC or vice-versa. I've used this on a few PAL xvid files and it works great.

You could try DivxToDVD, it does a decent job and I've had better luck with it for PAL>NTSC than some of the others. But for better quality, https://www.videohelp.com/convert#4;41

Check the audio in Gpot, also. MP3 VBR or AC3 can cause problems.

  4. You can convert from PAL to NTSC with VirtualDub and BeSweet. Then you can frameserve to your MPEG encoder.

Or convert the PAL AVI to PAL MPEG, but with NTSC resolution. Then use DGPulldown (25 -> 29.97fps) on the m2v.

I've used both of the above methods with complete success. Dunno about the patch method, supposedly it's hit-and-miss.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!
