If you have a stereo wav file, converting it to AC3 will not make it surround. Therefore there is nothing to be gained going wav>AC3>Mp3. You caould have simply gone wav > MP3 and got the same result.

If you have 6 mono channels and convert them to 5.1 AC3 you will have surround sound, but you will lose that when you go to mp3.

Basically, mp3 supports two channels, and that is all you will get into ot out of it. Going via AC3 is a waste of time if the end package for the sound is MP3.

Unclear what you want to achieve, but for Audio CD to MP3, just use EAC or CDEx or... There's nothing gained (but lost!) by involving AC3 in your process.

  5. Well MP3 sourround is also there though not very popular in my opinion.

But its not clear what you want to achieve in the end.

You won't get that by reencoding wav to ac3 to mp3.

If it supports MP3 surround. Which equals No.
Think about it for a while:
You start with stereo. Then you try to create some faux surround audio (5.1?) from the stereo source. Already this is questionable IMO.
Then you want to downmix this again, to MP3 which (with the exception of the "not supported by anything" surrond MP3 format) is stereo.
