Depends what you want to do.

DV is great for editing and cutting (all keyframes) but large files. Huffyuv is lossless but also creates large files and picvideo mjpeg is also a good codec.
Many people use Divx or xvid because the compression ratio to filesize is excellent. There are now newer H264 based codecs which need maximum system resourses for capturing but can deliver good results when re-encoding from dv or huffyuv. Just too many to list.

I use DV format as an intermediate codec because of my camera but most other times use divx or xvid for tv captures.

My choice is Xvid, too. Good quality, free and easy to handle, I mean, no problems with conversions.

Thanks, that narrows down my choices.

Is there some bitrate conversion from MPEG to XVID and other AVI codecs?...so I know how to maintain the quality, because I want to use constant bitrate instead of variable.
