    Hello All,

I am after some advice with regards to dual layer discs and the issue that I am having. I have so far tried a number of disc manufactures; Datasafe, Verbatim and Tuff all DVD+R DL (8.5GB). I had been using the Sony dru700a to write the data. It works fine when playing through the PC but when trying it on parents DVD player or my Philips DVDR890 it has a problem. It will not read full stop on parents (cheap) machine and only seems to play the first layer on the Philips. Any time I wish to view an episode recorded on the dual layer part of disc the Philips informs me of 'Disc Error'. Have emailed Philips and as usual no help what so ever with the comment that they have no plans to update 'firmware'.
Has anyone been able to record a dual layer disc and play all of it on a Philips DVDR890?
If so what media did you use?
I have now upgraded my recent new PC with Sony dru800a which takes (DVD-R DL) discs, not sure if this is better?

    Any ideas would be great!
    Regards

    Hello Toyota,
I'm also owner of a DVDR890 and desperatley trying to have a DL running on it. I also own a Philips DVD956 player and another recorder embedded in the home theater LX9000R which dvdr part is pretty similar to the DVDR890. After similar advices as yours (disc brands, Nero version, book type etc.) I finally got a couple of DL discs burned as DVD-Video that run on the DVD956 but as you experienced the second layer is not read on the recorder units. I don't get any message but just playback returns to menu. So far I couldn't conclude this is only related to DVDR890 firmware, it still may depend on media quality, disc structure etc. If anybody has any further advice it will be very welcome
