  1. Hi Folks --

Can anyone tell me if the abovementioned player is picky with what types of DVD media one puts into it? I've heard mention that some players won't read certain brand name discs. Just like to know as I'm thinking about ordering one of these players.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

The Philips players that I've used have all been very forgiving about media brands and types.

  3. That's great to know. Now, if I can just order one of these in Canada, I'll be all set. Best Buy has them in-store but not for order online. Saw another couple of spots but the mark-up puts it at about $100.00.

Philips players generally aren't picky, true, but I can tell you that my old DVP-642 had problems with DVD-R DL discs. I bought 3 Verbatim discs of the DVD-R DL type to use as an experiment and their host cost and playback problems on my DVP-642 didn't make me want to use any more.

Our general cautions about using good media apply and we generally recommend Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim for best results. One of my good friends just buys cheap, crap media and his discs often have problems. Some people insist on saving money but my feeling is that if you care at all that your discs will still work in a few years that you should invest in better discs to ensure that.

  5. Thanks for that, Jman. Currently it's Verbatim I have kicking about, though there's 100 TDKs that have sat on a shelf for sometime.
