I have a dvd/cd writer and a dvd/cd rom. Which one should be set to the master and which one should be set to slave?

    Thanks in advance!!

  2. I'm no expert, but you could put one as slave to the hard drive and put the other as master on its own IDE cable. Perhaps you could put the CD-writer on its own IDE.

I have two hard drives setup as master and slave on the same ribbon already.

When setting up the dvd/cd rom and dvd/cd writer on the same ribbon, which one should be master and which set to slave?

    should have been more specific!!

    G'day
I agree with Harry. Some DVD burners don't like to be slave. They just dont work well.

If you encode video, you should move the 2 HDs to different cables. Remember that the IDE channel has a max limit for communication, and the 2 devices share the total. If you encode video, always encode from 1 hd to the 2nd HD. Depending on how you use your computer, the best configuration would be the following:
    1 Master - OS HD
    Slave - DVD ROM
    2 Master - DVD Writer
    Slave - 2nd HD

  8. Normcar has stated the "ideal" setup imo, however, it doesn't hurt to have all optical drives on the secondary if that is a must. Depends on case dimensions and what fits where. Writers tend to like being setup as masters.
