  1. Hi guys,

I went on the Cinenow website and downloaded a couple of Dolby Digital trailers that I wanted to incorporate on some demo discs I was planning on piecing together using DVD shrink.

Initially I had a problem even downloading the trailers as my computer would automatically open up Windows media player and it wouldn't prompt me to select where I wanted to save the file to. In any event, I figured out how to at least save the file to my temporary files.

The problem I have is that the file was saved as a Windows Media file. The file is listed on the website as a DVD file. How can I convert this file back to a DVD file that DVD Shrink will read?

Unfortunately the only way to get WMV files to DVD format is to encode them to MPEG2 with something like TMPGenc.

However the Trailers you are talking about are already MPEG2 as you suggested (actually they are VOBS), but since the links are PHP programs you can't right-click and save, so you just need to disable WMP from auto-opening them.

You are obviously using IE as your browser, using FireFox the "save" option will pop-up.

However if you only have IE, I suggest you download them again in the VOB/MPEG2 format after you disable the WMP auto-open, as follows...

Bring up a window's "explorer" window and select 'Tools' -> 'Folder Options' -> 'File Types' and select the 'VOB' extension, and select the 'Advanced' button.
You want to edit the 'Open' action - by default it is set to WMP. Change this to any DVD Player you may have on your system, for example I have changed mine to..
    "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PowerDVD.exe" %1

Once you do this you should get the 'Save As' option when you click on the link.

If you already have the wmv file on your drive (which appears to be the case), try VSO DixtoDVD. If there are no errors in the stream, it should be able to convert it. The other thing to try would be X Video Converter, which is a little more fault tolerant.

  4. Bunyip,

Thanks for the advice; however, I seem to be having some trouble following the instructions. By the way, I have Windows XP Pro on my computer.

I opened up Internet Explorer and went to Tools but there was no tab for folder options. Am I checking in the correct place?

    Hi evt,

No, these settings are local settings found in "Windows explorer" not "Internet Explorer".

Just double-click on 'My Computer' and use the Tools option in that window.

  6. Thanks bunyip,

However, I checked my settings and Power DVD was alread my default setting. I went to the Cinenow site and the same thing happened, when I clicked on the download icon it opened up WMV. I changed the settings in WMV so it does not automatically play MPEG files. I then tried to download the trailer again; this time it didn't open up WMV but it still saved the file as a Windows file in my Temporary Internet Files directory. It did not give me the option to save the file to a specific desired destination.

I tried to open the file in Shrink but it could not open it. If it sounds like I missed something any help would be appreciated. Thanks again.

  7. evt,

I you already have WMV file downloaded on your hard disk you can use WinAVI Converter. It reads WMV file and will encode to VCD/SVCD/DVD.

I suggested something similar yesterday, but it appears to have go unnoticed.

Yes, but the trouble with that is the quality gets degraded when they get converted to WMV in the first place, and converting them back to MPEG degrades them even further and you lose the multi-channel audio. You really want to get the original encoded MPEG.

But I'm suspecting that 'evt' may be downloading the WMV versions that are also available on the site.

Is that the answer you want ... how to convert from wmv to vob or would you like a answer how to download the vob file ...

Install Flashget .... and do right-click for drop down menu and use Flashget to download the file ... it will be the vob file.

I just now went to Cinenow and used Flashget to download the ... City DD5.1 vob file.

Cool DD 5.1 vob file !!

  11. lacywest,

Where can I get Flashget, I did a search in the tools section of this site but did not find anything. By the way, I am in fact trying to download the VOB files.

    bunyip,

I don't believe I'm downloading the WMV files. The WMV files are at the bottom of the trailers page. I've been trying to download the dolby trailers at the top of the page.

  12. Alright, I downloaded Flashget and I then managed to download one of the trailers as a VOB file. However, I still can't open up these trailers in DVD Shrink 3.2. What do I have to do to get Shrink to open up a VOB file?

    Thanks in advance guys.
