I made the mistake of purchasing a Sony DVD that creates mini dvds. So far, I can't convert to an acceptable mpeg2 or even mpeg so that I can edit them.
Procoder crashes after about 11 minutes 30 seconds of converting a .vob file made on the Sony. I get the same result on two computers.
Can anyone tell me why Procoder might crash or how I can get around it?
Also, I am a newbe. I don't care about flashy things. I just want to put about three mini disks worth of video on one DVD. I have Procoder, which crashes. I tried the software that came with the camcorder, Imagemixer, and asked it to create a mpeg2 file. It did, but then then when I used Adobe Premeire the result was a shaky vidoe (unacceptable).
Also, I ran the .vob through TEMPGnc and got .mpeg files. But, I could not get Adobe Premire make sound come out on the disk. (When I added a file in Adobe Premire, the audio file did not appear as a wave picture that was as long as the video picture on the timeline, like I would have expected).
All I want to do is to put about 3 minidisks onto one regular sized dvd and have a video that does not go up and down when played and have some sound. Any ideas?

Virtualdub won't read in a .vob file. I get an error message stating that the file I a trying to read (a .vob file) is not a mpeg file.

If you want to edit mpeg files, try Tmpgenc Mpeg Editor . It's good.

Apparently you have a Sony video camera that records to mini DVD's and when you try converting these videos to mpeg2 or mpeg1 using Procoder the Procoder program crashes (I'm assuming that the video is ripped to the hard drive before the conversion attempt). Is this correct? If my understanding of your situation is correct then I think I know what might be causing your problem. If the Sony Video Camera is recording the audio as AC-3 like on their stand alone DVD recorders Procoder probably doesn't like the AC-3 audio that is multiplexed with the video. If you look at the specs for Procoder Express nowhere does it say it supports AC-3 (Dolby Digital) audio. You will either have to use editing software that is AC-3 compatible or some other software besides Procoder to convert your video files to a more flexible format.

You are correct. Sony video camera, and ripped to hard drive before conversion.
Wow! I can't belive you would have an answer that makes sense.
Tonight, when I can get to the Sony Video Camera manual, I will see if the specs say that it records audio in AC-3 format. I just figured that it recorded the audio within the .vob files, and, I figured, that the audio is standard. From what you are telling me, even within a .vob file the format of audio can be different.
Thanks a million. Please let me know if my assumption re: audio within .vob files, that they can be different, is correct.
I will let you know if I am successful. -
procoder has no problem with ac3 or dts files at all ..
i assume this is procoder 2 ?
procoder express also reads ac3 files i think .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -

in the reg'd user section at canopus - there is a mpeg file reader alternate reader if you need it -- though i dont know of anyone that ever did ..
you might want to check your dongle installation that its working correctly - as crashing is often because of this ..
also - procoder WILL crash if you select 24p+ pulldown and dvd profile ... this is covered on the canopus procoder forums .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
those dvd disk cameras though can cause problems with lots of apps ...
