Hello, Firstly, let me apologise for my last mail gaffe. I truly am sorry and ignorance is no excuse.

Can anyone help a complete novice please? Firstly, let me say I have looked through the forum but it is like looking for a needle in a haystack! So much information! I am not even sure how to phrase the question! here goes....

Kids coming to visit me next month (I live in Spain) I have a couple of films, "Tomb Raider" & "Harry Potter" To be precise. I have a Samsung TS-H552B DVD re-writer (works fine) I am using the "Cyberlink PowerProducer 2 Gold" To turn them from avi into mpeg/ (is that correct?)
Again, no problem. I take my DVD out of the Computer, scuttle downstairs and put it into my Phillips DVD player/recorder. Still no problem.

It starts playing on my Sony TV. At last we get to it! The picture and sound are fine except for the fact that the picture looks squashed up. It is still watchable (just) but it looks as if it should be on a wide screen! It is as if I have taken the picture and put a hand on each side and pushed my hands together so everybody looks a bit thinner and taller.

That is the problem.. I apologise for being so long winded but I was not sure how to explain myself. Anyway, any help would be greaty appreciated by me and the kids, and thank you very much for taking the time to read this.
Finally, once again I apologise and hope I have acted correctly this time.

  2. The issue that you are dealing with is "Aspect Ratio". Your conversion software "Cyberlink Powerproducer 2" (which I am not familiar with" should have a setting to change the aspect ratio. Look for an option that is either 16:9 (widescreen) or 4:3 (fullscreen). Your movie is widescreen, so you need to select 16:9. Currently Cyberlink is converting to 4:3 which is "squishing" everything.

I'm not so sure that this software does have such an option. I think it may automatically author all output to 4:3, irrespective of the source file's aspect ratio ... which would be ludicrous if that was the case.

So if anyone knows where the aspect ratio setting can be found in either Cyberlink Powerproducer 2 or 3, I'd be happy to know.

thought you were ripping off a cd..... Anyhow the aspect ratio is in the header file of the AVI (or whatever format) which is why it displays properly on your computer. You need software that supports widesreen for authoring. You need to specify widescreen or 16:9 when you author, don't know if what your using does.

Ulead Video Studio Does...... There's others, even yours might.

    Thanks , we know.

Only question that needs to be answered here is whether what Cyberlink passes off as a whizz bang Authoring Application (ie. PowerProducer) has a setting for maintaining the AR of 16:9 source files.

  10. Firstly thanks for the responses. I seem to be able to transfer files to DVD+Rwriter now and play on our TV.

Having read the responses can anyone (Without recommendations!) suggest a program that gives the choice of "Aspect" ie Letterbox, pillerbox,14.9, 6.3 etc? I am using "Cyberlink power producer gold 2" which is a really good programme for a "Newbie" Like myself. However what it does not do is give a choice of Aspec ratio"

Any help or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

    1. TMPGEnc (or Canopus Procoder) to convert from avi to DVD compliant streams.

    then

    2. TMPGEnc DVD Author to author & burn your DVD.

    Use this Guide:

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/186739.php

If your avi doesn't have ac3 sound, just skip the "Extract the AC3 from the AVI" part.
