  1. Hi. I need help removing one of the voices from a Chinese dvd drama set purchased from a Chinatown video store. The dvd has 6 hours of drama in mpg vob format.

Unfortunately, when you play it, the audio portion plays not only Chinese, but also Japanese audio as well. Simultaneously! A way to fix the audio problem seems to be unhooking one of the RCA jacks in the back of the DVD player to remove one of the voices.

Since I do not wish to unplug the back of my dvd player each time I want to watch the Chinese drama, I am trying to edit out the Japanese voice.

Problem is, I tried tmpeg, ifoedit, dvdshrink, and all other dvd editing softwares I could find on this website. While the softwares seem to allow you to edit out a stereo portion, or a French or Japanese track that is recorded SEPARATELY, no software allows you to edit out a mono audio. that has two voices.

    Any suggestion? Thanks in advance.

you will have to extract the audio track and load it into goldwave or soundforge and remove 1/2 of the stereo track and copy the other track over to the deleted track - and then re-encode into ac3 (with another app)

seems easier to just turn the balance to the left or right or unhook 1 channel ..

press "audio" on your remote, that should cycle between the language tracks (chinese>japanese>both)

If your remote doesn't have an "audio" button then go through your on screen menu to change the audio.

not going to work with only one track of audio and the lang. split left and right channel ..

this is not uncommon on some asian disks ..

  5. BJ_M,

Thank you for your quick reply. I suppose that means I will have to re-encode the dvd and redo the dvd menu, etc. which means I run the risk of audio sync problem as well as encountering other problems from redoing the six hour dvd.

Problem is, groan...there are four dvds to this drama set (24 hours of editing). I do not want to spend the next two weeks to three weeks trying to re-encode and debug this one drama set.

You said this is a common problem for asian dvd sets. Why do they have this problem? Do asians enjoy listening to two audio sets at once? Do they have some particularly sensitive ear canals which allow them to comprehend Chinese and Japanese simultaneously? Or is this a flaw arising out of a single boiler-room dvd author with a bad system who doesn't realize that his copies are inherently flawed?

no - they just listen to one or the other channel

you dont have to re-encode the whole thing - just the audio ..

  7. Just use the audio balance (left/right) control on your TV.

  9. Thank you all for the quick responses!!!

It all makes perfect sense to me now. In my narrow one-track minded thinking, it never dawned on me that the tv or the dvd players in Asia may be more advanced than mine and they have a control for actually turning down the audio level for the left side or right side to zero, so that they could listen to only one side.

So, a solution for me, I suppose, is to get a newer dvd player or a newer tv. Or to re-code the audio section only and hope this editing won't take a full week and cause endless headache for me. Could someone show me a link to a good guide in editing and recoding to ac3, etc.? Thanks again.
