  1. just began shopping for a dvd recorder. i'm looking at buying one of these:

    pioneer DVR-520HS
    jvc DR-MH30
    sony RDR-HX900

any suggestions as to which one? i need hdd, 4 mode recording, high speed dubbing and firewire in/out. dual-layer would be nice too. the pioneer seems to fit this best, but i'm not certain about some of the features.

    All good choices.
    JVC would be my pick.

Just to keep things up in the air, I love my Pioneer 510 and recommed the 520 highly. I compared its features with the Sony when I bought it and concluded the Pioneer was the better choice.

Pioneer model seems to be the only one with firewire in/out feature, but only limited to transfer AVI files, like all standalone DVD recorders.

I have two Pioneer recorders. The 210s (no HDD or DL) & the 420H-s (no DV or DL). Both have been flawless so far. I'm sure the 420H-s (no DL) will fit your needs. I don't know of any Desktop unit with DL, yet.

I think I would go Pioneer then JVC for my choices to replace my Philips should it die. The only reason I say it really is because a friend in Australia bought one....sent me a DVDR from it....and it reacted perfectly to all of my software choices.
    Just my opinion....

I would not get a hard-on for dual-layer just yet. If it's anything like PC burning (and it always is), it's got a long way to go before it works decently and is affordable.

For those of you that are supporting the Panasonics, have you observed 'poor video quality' from the 510H or 520H as the "review" claimed??

Not at all. In fact I find it to be superb. And I'm picky about picture quality.

  16. I bought a JVC DR-MH30s recorder and it offers super quality picture, many editing features and a easy to use remote. The prices are less than the other models. $585 with shipping from any NY video store
