  1. Can you explain this region free stuff and also what exactly firmware is and does?

  2. Regions are a method that supposedly prevents you from viewing a DVD in a part of the world where a film has not been released yet. Different parts of the world have a code, and if a DVD is not from your region it won't play.
    Firmware is the code which actually controls your burner and tells it what to do.
