  1. I have some really weird avi files that I downloaded off the net. I can play them only in VLC, but how can I convert them to MPEG for VCD? FFMPEG won't work, and neither will MissingMpegTools.

Try using divx.com's Gershwin or Divx Doctor II to convert AVIs to be playable in Quicktime. For really odd ones try Divx Tool.

To convert to MOV use Divx Doctor II. Read the instructions. You may need to download and install some of these odd codecs for your /Library/Quicktime folder:

    msmpeg4v1.component
    msmpeg4v2.component

And these of course are very necessary (first two definitely):

    ffmpeg DivX.component
    3ivx D4 4.0.3 for OSX
    DivX Pro™ 5.component

  3. Divx Doctor and Gershwin don't work, and I have the last 3 codecs you mentioned.

But where can I find these?

    msmpeg4v1.component
    msmpeg4v2.component

I'd go to versiontracker.com and search for "divx tool" and try that. Be sure to read the README file first.

About problems and those codecs and more (WMA decoding as well) go to here:

    http://doctor.3ivx.com/faq.html

and go to the Problems section.
