I apologize if this has been posted a zillion times before.![]()
I am looking for the best software available for making absolutely lossless, bit-perfect backups of my DVD movies. I don't want any re-authoring or re-encoding. This goes for my DVD5 as well as DVD9 movies.
I am using DVDXcopy now and it does a good job but I wonder is there a better way?

If all you want is main movie you can do it for free with dvdtoolbox. Sometime in the future it'll do menu, etxtras, etc.

for DVD-5 movies best is to use DVDDecrypter (free also) and rip to .iso then burn that .iso with DVDDecrypter. -
Thanks for the response, I'll keep an eye on that software for such a futre version. Let me clarify though, I do indeed want all menus and extras, literally perfect backups down to the FBI warning.
Is there a better method or is DVDXCopy perfectly fine? -
I guess I'll compile a list and hope to hear opinions on what software is better than another.
Perfect DVD-5 backups including all extras and menus:
DVD Decrypter
DVDXCopy
Perfect DVD-9 backups including all extras and menus:
DVDXCopy
Honorable mention:
DVDToolbox which will do perfect DVD-9 backups but NO menus or extras. -
Their is no other way all other programs you remove extra's and menu's and some you compress the movie and extra's and menu's theonly bad thing about DVDXCOPY is you need to use 2 disc's on some movie but you do get a perfect copy. I use DVDXCOPY, DVD2ONE and DVD shrink on some movies.

Gotcha, so people tell me if I have this right.
The only option for perfect, complete backup of a DVD-9 is DVDXCopy, right?
So there are multiple options for perfect, complete backup of a DVD-5. Of course DVDXCopy will work but other software like Instant Copy and DVD2One, although designed to squeeze DVD-9 into DVD-5, WILL do bit-perfect copies of DVD-5, right? In other words, such 'squeezer' software won't do any re-authoring or re-encoding and just copy it perfectly if it's DVD-5, correct? -
You can also use ifoedit for bit-to-bit copies of dvd 9. It is available for download in the "tools" area to the left. It can be a bit convoluted to use, so read the available guides in this forum before you jump in with this software. Best thing about it is that it is free. DVDXCopy is great if you are looking for a more "one click" solution for DVD 9. It does watermark and add a disclaimer scrren to the finished product. The other tools discussed, DVD2One, Instant Copy, DVD95Copy, DVD Squeeze, degrade the video during the transcode process. They are great tools if the DVD 9 is relatively small, say, under 6-7 gig. My personal favorite is DVD2One, but the other tools tend to give you far more options for Menus, Extras, etc. Good Luck!

Oh, if you are coping a DVD 5:
Smartripper (or DVD Decryptor)
Burning Software, such as Nero.
Use the ripping software to rip the DVD 5 to a folder called VIDEO_TS (use the files mode and select all files if you want menus and extras) on your hard drive (Must be all CAPS) Do not forget the underscore! Also creat an empty folder called AUDIO_TS.
After this is done, I use Nero in the UDF/ISO mode and burn the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to my DVD -R. So far, works great on all players tested. And it is a bit-to-bit copy. You create your own reality. Interested in media servers and HTPC? Can we talk? -
Just from my experience....
DVD-5....DVD Decrypter is #1, hands down, easy, quick, It's all I use.
DVD-9....this is a bit tougher, everything kind of depends on what you want, if you want a full backup (menu's, extra's and everything) I still rip with decrypter, then I use different programs to get rid of the things I don't want...usually audio and subtitles...I usually use IFOedit usually to get rid of all subtitles and all audio except english, then I use Instant copy 7 to squeeze the rest of it to the size I need. ShrinkDVD sounds pretty good but I haven't ran it through yet.
DVD-9....if you just want the movie then what I do is I rip with Decrypter, rip the extra audio and subs out with IFOedit, then make it the right size with IC7. BUT>>>>after that I make the PDI an ISO with PDI2ISO check it, it will almost always be off (for me anyway), so I mount the drive using Daemon tools, re-rip with decrypter, redo my IFO's using IFO edit then make an image file using Imgtools 0.89 then burn with Decrypter.
Burn.....if I use IC7 then I also use PDI2ISO to create the image file, I also use Daemon tools to check it before burning....Daemon tools...what a coaster saver.....if all is well then I burn with DVD Decrypter.
Probably not the best way to do it, but it works for me and the quality is great (at least as far as I can tell)
