Hey Guys I downloaded a regular avi format video. When I encode with TmpgEnc it's only audio and a black screen for video...I have divx codecs and players. I also have the patches, etc. Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong?

    And the Direct Show priorities?

  3. I'm having the same problem. I used TMPGenc to convert AVI to MPG and when i went to convert a file tonight, it was just a black screen during conversion. I used vdub to extract the audio first then tried to convert using TMPGenc but it was a no go. Could it be because when i opened the program tonight, i got the message that said that the program was expired? Does this cause it to be useless?

The black screen usually means the Direct Show Priority was not set to be the highest in the Environmental Settings. The expiration of MPGEnc only disables the MPEG-2 functions. If you still want to convert MPEG-1, you can still do so.

  5. What should the environmental settings be set on? And also, would there be much of a noticable difference in the way files are converted to vcd format if you can't convert to mpeg2. I'm not sure what the difference is between mpeg1 and 2 so i don't know what to look for.

    Thanks for the help.

Quality wise, at the same settings (resolution and bitrate) there's almost no difference between mpeg1 and mpeg2. The VCD standard uses mpeg1 with resolution and bitrates considerably lower then the SVCD standard which uses mpeg2. If you're used to SVCD then you might be disappointed with VCD. It is possible to go outside of the VCD standards to get better quality, but compatability with set top DVD players will be questionable. Try it, you might find VCD acceptable. If you don't, then consider buying TMPGEnc, it's reasonable.

Check the Glossary and What Is sections for definitions of mpeg1/2 and different video standards. 8)
