I have just bought myself a 2nd pioneer A05 and the two drives have different firmware one has 1.21 and the other 1.30. I use dvd decrypter to rip and the 1.21 rips at 2x while the 1.30 rips at 9x (it ripped a 2gb dvd in 3.5 mins).
I thought the drive max read 2x but it must be the new firmware.
every single media i have thrown at it work.
just thought i would tell every one so they can upgrade their firmware (if they wanna risk it).

My A05 was 1.21 and now upgraded to 1.30
The only DVDS that i can't rip faster than 2x is "most hollywood movies".
I have DVDs i bought at walmart (those cheap $4.88 ones) which will rip at full speed. And I have DVDs that were made in Hong Kong which also rip at full speed.
But I don't notice any DVDs that did rip at 2x with 1.21 firmware that now rip any faster.
Maybe your new drive just doesn't have what ever puts the log on it? from my experience, I don't see a difference in the firmware. Please try an upgrade your 1.21 to 1.30 and see if it changes...
also.. (if possible)... try pulling the 1.30 firmware from your new drive and compare it with the 1.30 firmware posted on Pioneer's web site!
You might just be holding he key that will help the rest of us rip faster!
thanks,

most likely the reason you are seeing increased rip speed on cheap/hk dvd's is because they're single layer discs.. "most hollywood movies" are dual layer discs.. a friend of mine had a cheap creative labs dvd-rom, it would rip at 7/8x on single layer discs, but when tried a dual layer disc, max 2x..
i know that most dvdrw drives are limited reading "most hollywood movies" at 2x, but if they had it so that it could rip movies at faster than 2x that would be cool..
a nice firware for the pioneer a05 would be a firmware with the following features;
region free
hacked for faster dvd-r burning on certain media
faster rip speeds -

be aware.
I've tried this firmware and now RecordNow Max can't seem to find my dvr-105 drive. Before the upgrade it did just fine!
As far as I could check is that Nero, dvddecrypter and copytodvd still can identify the drive correctly.
