  1. I have a Sony mini-DV camcorder with i-link port and I want to do video capturing that would output a divx file in one step without going thru the hassle of outputting a DV-AVI file and then converting it to divx. Also, I don't want to use any hardware capturing cards. Can anyone tell me how to do this ??

i believe that the ulead video studio products can do this. you simply set the ADVC as the capture input, and Divx as your output.
    things to bear in mind:
DV resolution is 720X480(576 for PAL) which is higher than people usually use for Divx.
Divx encoding is CPU intensive, and before it even starts it has to decode the DV as well. in order to do this real time without dropping frames means quality will suffer, a lot.
Editing Divx (cutting ads etc) is a pain compared to DV, and you're stuck with the low quality Divx, so making a nice DVD or CVD even won't go very well.

  4. Even at a high bitrate, the size is so much smaller than DV. cutting ads isnt so hard with virtualdub.

true, the cutting can be done, but requires that GOP, keychain, or whatever you want to call it to be re-encoded.
