  1. Hi, I have a pioneer 105 at firmware version 1.00. I've been exclusively using Ritek G03 media. I was thinking about upgrading to version 1.3. I don't want to upgrade if it's gunna cause me any problems, but I was hoping it might help to speed up my ripping speed like it has for a few on these forums. Anyone upgrade theirs and have any suggestions?>

  3. Hi That_Kid,

if you have Ritek G3s you should upgrade to the hacked firmware 1.30. It gives you 2x speed burning capability for those.

    See:

    http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=10585&start=200

As far as ripping speed goes there were some reports that 1.30 is faster than 2.0 speed but my first tests showed that this is not the case if you try it on CSS protected discs (pretty much all Hollywood movies). Recommendation: Get a cheap DVD-ROM and rip with this. Much faster.

    Hope that answers your questions.

    hey

so if ya have a seperate dvd-rom drive ya can get much better than 2x ripping yes?

thing is how? because the pioneer 105 supposed to be 8x read, so its kinda forced to read at 2x so how will a normal dvd-rom read faster? isn't it forced to read at 2x like the dvd writer drives?

also which drives are people getting good results with, i have a list of drives i can buy right this min which are:
    LG GDR-8161BB 16x DVD-Drive
    LiteON 16x DVD-ROM
    Pioneer DVD-120
    Samsung SD-616QBB 16x48x DVD-ROM (Black)
    Sony DDU1612 DVD-ROM

    any of thesr recommended?

    thanks

  6. Hi JamesUK,

yes, you will get much faster ripping speeds! I have 2 of the cheapest no-name drives and they do it 7x average and up to 11x.

See please attached link for some tests:

    http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Articles/Specific.asp?ArticleHeadline=DVD%2DRom+Roundup+Vol3&index=4

    There is also

    www.cdspeed200.com

    for DVD-ROM speed results.

My guess would be that the LiteOn is pretty fast- but, as metioned I just bought cheap ones in the range of $15 -$20 after mail-in rebate.

  8. Hi JamesUK,

I guess you live in the UK.....Too bad in this case...

Just a little hint. The fastest Rip DVD-ROM that I have is an EPO-8216 sold by CompUSA under the Maddogmultimedia brand. Just ripped a DVD with 9.3x average / 12.3x maximum. BTW - this drive has NO region protection at all right from the factory. I think I was pretty lucky with this less than $20 drive...

  9. Remember that a lot of the time the ripping speed depends on the quality of the disc you are trying to rip. I have a Sony 16 speed DVD-ROM drive and can get anything from 0.1 to 12 times rip speed depending on the disc in use. Average time for me for ripping a movie seems to be 13 mins.

  10. My 1 year old Lite-on DVD drive will rip up to 16x But my new one will only rip at 2x

new: Lite-on LTD 163 - locked at 2x for CSS protected DVDs
old: Lite-on ???? - not locked! (the computer is powered off right now so i can't get the drive model from it)

as far as i can tell.. most DVD-R drives that were made from 2002 and 2003 are locked at 2x ripping for all CSS protected DVDs.

So if you go buy a new one..then check out the model to see if it is locked first.. http://www.cdrinfo.com listed my LTD-163 as being able to rip the Martrix at 10x, but i just tried it and only got 2x on it....

i'm not sure if the ripping speed can be controled by the firmware or not..?

  11. deaves,

make sure that DMA is enabled in the BIOS, in your IDE controller setup and that ASPI is installed on your computer. Load the Nero trial software from Nero.com, install and run Nero Infotool to check.

Without DMA enabled, in PIO mode the ripping speed is always in the range of 2x max.
I think your new DVD-ROM should then also perform at higher speed for ripping.

What is ASPI? I get a message when I use Smartripper "NO ASPI"
Also I have updated my firmware and Now I can burn any 1x media at 2x and also get a ripping speed of 6.5 average 10.2 max.

This was on a cheap "adult" title so I don't know yet how it will perform on a "proper" movie but I'll find out in the next couple of days I suppose.

  13. ASPI are SCSI drivers. Even if you have an IDE drive the control is handled via a mimicked SCSI interface for it.

    http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/drivers_by_product.html?sess=no&language=Engl...duct/ASPI-4.70

Here is the link for downloading. Use version 4.71.2

You will be limited with the Pioneer DVR-105 to 2x speed ripping as soon as CSS copy protection is detected. Almost all "non-adult" Hollywood movies.

    Just from my experience......

But if it works ok then don't mess with it. I have the 105 with the 1.00 firmware, mine works just fine, it reads it writes, I don't think the few minutes you are trying to save is worth the risk or the hassle especially with the Ritek media being kind of picky anyway. I use Riteks also. I go by the same advice they give you about BIOS upgrades....if it works....leave it alone.

If you want to rip faster rip with your DVD-ROM. I have a pioneer DVD-ROM drive and while I don't know exactly what speed I am ripping at since I use cladXP to rip...usually, I do know it is faster than my Pioneer DVD-R/RW.

Just my 2 cents and I had to borrow one of them.

  18. bu-dvdr,

that's the drive! However, I can't guarantee that it is region free when sold under the EPO brand as it is when sold under the MadDog brand by CompUSA in the US.
