I was just told by Netflix that one reason nearly every single new DVD I get skips is because the dual VHS/DVD players can't get around the code studios have put in DVDs to stop copyright infringements. I don't want to record the DVDs (who would want to record onto a VHS now anyway?), I just want to be able to watch a movie without having to fast-forward past each skip. Anyone know where I can find a firmware upgrade?

    Thanks

That sounds like b.s. to me. The "code" that Netflix refers to is CSS and it has been in DVDs since day 1. Anyway, combo players such as yours have never been allowed to record from DVDs. In fact, DVD recorders are often so paranoid that they won't even record home recordings on DVD to another DVD.

It could be that your player is defective. Good luck finding that firmware upgrade. I did a quick search and I can't even find a company webpage.
I have the feeling that your player may be a few years old based on the info I am seeing. You should be aware that today's DVD players are NOT built to last and they often stop working after a couple of years, sometimes much sooner. How long DVD players last depends in part on luck, in part on usage and in part on if the player is in a well ventilated location or not.

The only other potential problem I can think of besides your player being defective is that if you are renting an awful lot of DVDs by Disney and Columbia you should be aware that both companies use special extra copy protection methods that could, in theory, be what your player is choking on.

Strange, but I bought that same model a few months ago off Craigs List for the kids to use. The machine works just fine for VHS tapes and DVDs, both commercial and home made. Plays games ok too.

I didn't get a manual, but I googled and found it (retrevo.com). You may find something there to help you out.
