  1. When I try to open a video file in Virtual Dub it says I need a Video For Windows (VWF) codec. I have lots of codecs installed but I don't know what I should do about this one. Any help is appreciated. Thx

Open your AVI file using the 'AVICodec' program (see TOOLS section on this site) - it should tell you what codec it needs.

  3. I believe the file you are using may be a renamed .asf file or maybe a partial download. I have gotten this problem occaisonally.

The simplest solution I could resolve is to

    1. run TMPGEnc, select File menu, new project
    2. click on video source browse button and select the AVI file. You may need to adjust the VFAPI plugins for the file to open
    3. Select File, Output to File, AVI file. You should select a compressor for the video (say HUFFYUV)
    4. Save it

You now have a valid AVI that VirtualDub (or anything) can open.

Note: this method works with just about anything Media Player can play (ASF, WMV etc)
