  1. I am thinking of purchasing a DVD burner. Right now I use TMPGEnc to encode my AVI files to MPEG 2 and burn with Nero onto a CD-R.
What benifits would I gain from a DVD burner other than size of discs? Is the quality of the video and sound the same as a CD-R or better? I do have a TV DVD player that says will play both formats + -.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi MJC! The benefits are many fold. First, as you mentioned, is the size. 4.7 gig means more size for--usually--better quality. Mpeg2 vs Mpeg1 higher bit rates, etc. all add up to better quality. Another advantage is encoding time or lack of it. When I started with vcd's it could take 6-8 hours to encode a movie!! With dvd2one, I can trascode and burn a DVD in about 70 minutes. I have a pioneer a104. The new one is the a105. A lot of folks here have the Sony dual format drives which is the best of both worlds: + and - ! There are sooooo many interesting tools to encode, transcode, and transfer. Have fun. If you have any more questions, send me a message.

  3. well if all you are doing is encoding avi to mpeg then don't even bother with a dvd burner. but if you are thinking about copying dvds then yes go with a dvd burner. no point in wasting that much money if all you are doing is burning downloaded avi files.
