  1. I am a newbie to both DV editing and encoding and this forum so forgive me if this question has been asked before but I really need some quick help and am hoping you folks can provide it.

I captured a bunch of DV footage, edited and encoded it out of Premiere 6.5 for Windows using Adobe's MPEG encoder. I burned these files to DVDs using the included Sonic Solutions Easy CD Creator. No problems. Now the client wants Windows Media Files (asf) for their LAN. So . . . I pulled the .vob files from the DVD, renamed them using .mpg so Premiere would recognize them and encoded them, using the OEM version of Cleaner EZ that came with Premiere, as .wmv. Again, no problem. I get audio and video-- only at a smaller frame size (240x320). The EZ version doesn't allow me to adjust frame size (I want 640x480 for a really fast LAN) so I purchase Cleaner 5 (full version), load it up and it wont encode the files. It says that Windows Media Format requires an audio file. Can somebody tell me why this now will not work and what I can do to get it to work? Are there other packages out there I should be using or am I just missing a step?

Thank you in advance for any and all help.

  2. Dectrypt the .vobs to the HD. Then use DVD2AVI create a project file. Create a frameserve .avi with vfapi. then open the .avi in windows movie maker. export as .asf.

  3. By "decrypt" you mean to just copy them and change the extension to .mpg as I have been doing? Thank you for your suggestion.

  4. ehe. No. Get DVDDectryper from the tools section (on the sidebar) of this webpage.

Don't rename to .mpg. vobs have scrambled content, so the media on those vobs will play out of order. Thats why you use a program that was made for reading vobs, and reading the content correctly. DVD2AVI is a popular program that does this. Than save a project file from DVD2AVI. open that project file in VFAPI and create a frameserving .avi. then open that .avi in any program you want.

  5. You should learn your stuff before you start charging people. ("now the client...") says that they are paying you. You are charging for something that you don't know how to do. Not very professional if you ask me.

  6. I appreciate all your help. You obviously know more than I when it comes to video and I am greatful for the help.

Unfortunately your last post points to your immaturity in business and in communications. In the future you may wish to stick to the topics you are versed in and have all the facts for. I offer this not as a personal attack but as a critique from someone who does have a great deal of experience in both. If you wish further information or to carry this topic off in a different area please respond to me off-line. I will be happy to respond to you.

Thank you again for your kind assistance.

Why don't you go to the Windows Media Authoring site.
They have a plug in for Premiere (or did at the time of 5.1)
that allows you to do everything you want without CLEANER...
also downloadable is a stand alone application that makes asf from mpg files supplied..
or, If you had your original project from adobe premiere you could just re render (without bringing a renamed VOB in also)
