    Hello all-

I am wanting to simply break a movie into parts for the individual scenes. In the past I have used vdub, tmpgenc or womble mpeg wizard software to do pretty much any editing. The file that I am currently trying to edit plays fine on VLC and MPC. The properties of the video file are shown as WVC1 on MPC player and VLC player.

When I try and open the file in any editing software I get an error message saying that it is not a supported file or the codec is not installed. When I run the file in gspot it says the codec cannot be determined for the video. The audio is AC1. I also tried using Cut Assistant and WMencoder software because of some info I read online. Same problem. Cannot open the file.

Anyone have a suggestion on editing the file? Do I need to install another codec even though the files play fine? If so, how do I locate the correct codec?

    Mediainfo shows it as WMA2.

  4. asfbin is your best bet (no preview, cut by timecode); you can safely rename .asf to .wmv

you can open it in vdub and make cuts if you have vc-1 enabled in the ffdshow vfw configuration , but cannot save in .asf/wmv (will be wrapped in avi)

I tried to install asfbin twice but i get an error that says the installation configuration could not be completed and to try again. Same thing twice.

Movica requires the .NET framework to be installed and I don't want to do that. I installed that on an older computer of mine and it screwed up all kinds of stuff. I think it had to do with Image Grabber II if I recall correctly.

    Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

  6. you don't install asfbin, it's a standalone portable exe

it's the most stable tool for cutting all types of wmv

otherwise you can look at re-encoding to something else

Well here is the error I get with asfbin. They describe it as an installation problem.

I got the file to open in Movie Maker, now I just need to figure out how it works.

    Thanks for the help.

    I got it done! Yeah!

I opened the file in Movie Maker which apparently installed a codec. When that happened I was able to open the file in WMEncoder File Editor. Then I was able to cut it up and save the files quickly with no changes to the file format. It was rather quick.

    Thanks for the help folks!
