    Why do you need an alternative? The above is a good way.

    In any case, I can think of two other ways:

    1. Load up your VOB file or VOB set with FlaskMPEG 0.6+ Choose the audio stream you want and then save it to wav.

    2. Use a DVD ripper to extract the AC3 stream from the vob files. Merge them. Then use a proggy like AC3Dec to decode it to wav.

    Use Vob2Audio

    extracts the sound as and .ac3, .mp3, or .wav

    can be set up for multiple bitrates, even variable..

    I use that as my preferred method to extract audio, and just use DVD2AVI for frameserving...
    hasn't failed me yet, and I don't have to worry about normalizing, and other crap... sounds better to my ears too.
