  1. Can you burn a dvd-rw disc in data mode? What program can do it? I tried Nero Express which came with my burner but it would only burn cd's.

  2. Yes, in fact -RW and +RW are used mainly for backing up data. Us video encoding nuts here actually are the minority. But most non Video nuts use re-writable for data cause they can backup, and append their backup, or erase it and do a more currant b/up.
I use it for both. Mainly data, but also for testing a DVD video if I'm trying a new authoring technic just to avoid a DVD-R coaster. Well my rewritable is DVD-RAM, but same concept here in this discussion.

Maybe this will clear up some things:

While CD's can come with different types of specialty tracks...
    • Audio (2352byte)
      Mode1 and XA Mode2Form1 General Data (2048byte)
      Mode2 AV-Data (2336byte)
      XA Mode2Form2 AV-Data (2324byte), e.g. PhotoCD Imagepak, VCD MPEG

DVD's only come as ONE track type -- Data. Even more specifically, a Mode1 Data track, using the UDF or UDFbridge filesystem.
That's ALL DVD's. Everyone of them. The difference is in the APPLICATION / Presentation type. That's where DVD-Video is seen only as IFO/BUP/VOB files in the VIDEO_TS folder, DVD-Audio is seen only in the AUDIO_TS folder, and other types of data are seen in other folders.
This actually simplifies the choices in the burning process. On the other hand, AUTHORING can now be more complicated.

This also helps explain why one can't just directly transfer material to DVD's from AudioCD's or VCD's. These specialty track types don't exist in the DVD realm.

Now, I still haven't gotten a handle on how multisession and MRW figures into this...

    My $.02 worth,

  4. So can anyone reccomend a good program for general archive use with my dvd-rw?

  5. Nero, or Nero's DLA Program called IN CD. Either will work. Nero will burn a data DVD just like your used to burning cd's. IN CD Will let you drag and drop to you -RW just like a floppy, but remember when using rewritable media you gotta format it first.
