I've downloaded numerous dvd screeners encoded wit xvid, and then when I run them through vdub mp3 freeze(because of vbr audio) to check for errors vdub crashes about halfway through. When I load them into tmpgenc to start encoding tmpgenc locks up. I have the nimo codec pack installed with xvid. What could the problem be. Thanks

Go to the tools section on the left. Download gspot. When you load your avi file into it, gspot will tell you what kind of codec is used and whether or not you have that particular codec installed in your system. It is a good diagnostic tool for analyzing your avi files. Personally, I would like to take everyone who uses an Xvid codec to compress a film out to lunch and treat them to a barbed wire sandwich.

Most likely it is the nimo codec pack....unintall that. and try installing just the
divx codec
http://www.divx.com/divx/
and the xvid codec
http://www.roeder.goe.net/~koepi/xvid.shtmlfirst link, latest binary.
these are the only 2 video codecs I have on my system and never ran into a problem. -
Thank you for your replies. Would not having the right codec installed also cause the movie to play back scrambled and colored with green in the backround. Thanks

Just use the FOURCC changer from the Xvid codec pack!!!!
Put in both fields DivX and hit APPLY.(and not divx3 or anything else!!!!)
Now you can encode as usual with NO quality loss!
I have experience in encoding for a couple of years now, and believe me,
I know what I`m talking about. Forget all the guides with environmental changes in TempGenc. etc. Just do what I wrote above and all your XviD problems are gone.
Btw. use the ffdshow codec pack instead of Nimo (Nimo sucks!)
Any questions regarding encoding: mail me and I`ll try to help!!!!!!

Ok. I have tried everything. I uninstalled the nimo codec pack, and installed the xvid codec, the divx codec, and just the audio codecs from nimo. The movies play ok, but when loading into TMPGenc it locks up and I have to reset my machine. I even tried what Qeef said and changed everything to divx in FourCC. The file is then unsupported in TMPGEnc. I'm beginning to think that whomever came up with the xvid codec needs to be shot because evidently the codec sucks or maybe TMPGEnc needs to add better support for xvid encoded files.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

dcapp1,
It may be possible that TMPGenc is locking up do to the VBR audio. Try to demux it in Vdub into a wav then load that seperate into TMPGenc with the the video.
not really sure if that will help.
Also, I am leary of anything in Nimo...even the audio codecs. Try uninstalling everything Nimo...and just make sure you have mp3 codecs.
aha....then their is this
