  1. I just made a backup of Lethal Weapon II. I used Instant Copy to burn it. It is a DVD-5 disc but I took out all the extras to make the disc size smaller. After I burned the disc I put it in my Sony DVSN715 dvdplayer (brand new one) and POOF the Sony would not play it and a message popped up on the screen saying "The disc is dirty". I have NEVER seen this message before on a dvd player. However, the movie plays fine in my Apex 1200 and in my DVD-ROM (both of them)on my computer. Anyone know what the heck this is?

first of all, if it is a DVD-5 why didn't you just rip and burn the whole disc.

however, I have seen this wierd error before, and it is usually an anomoly. the two times it happened to me (on my dad's computer) I just burned the DVD a second time and the new disc wored fine.

can't give an actual explaination though.

  3. I tried to rip and burn with DVDEncryptor but it messed up and made a coaster. I then used InstantCopy and it worked fine but now I have that "dirty disc" bs.

  4. elqueso, what drewson is saying is right..you should never have to take or strip out extras on a DVD-5. If you screwed up and got an error, then you might want to try it again on an RW to test it and see what the deal is. As far as your problem goes...it's very simple..it's your DVD PLAYER. I've said it before and will say it again...SONY makes CRAP dvd players. Don't get me wrong, I think Sony products are the best electronics products on the market overall, with the exception of their dvd players. And it isn't so much about the quality, it's the fact that they had previously refused to make a legitimate standalone dvd player due to being an advocate against piracy.

I believe they have changed their beliefs, but that won't help you for your dvd player now. Get a real multiformat dvd player and you'll be fine. You say your Apex reads the disk fine, then great, use that one. I've read this "dirty disk" problem from SEVERAL people trying to play DVD-R/+ +RW disks in their Sony standalone. Forget about the disk dirty message, English translation to disk dirty is...Disk Dirty= I suck as a standalone player and can't play that disk format. Please put in an original DVD Video Disk, thanks.

funny you should say that, it was my dad's Sony DVD player which gave the "Dirty Disc" error.

to boot, my mom's Sony DVD player won't play most of the homemade DVDs and VCDs I have made for her (even though it says Video-CD on the player!)

F*ck Sony for DVD players, but I swear by them for most other products.

I couldn't of said it better msyelf. I know some of the Sony standalones "claim" to be multi-format, but boy is that "PHONY SONY." Anyway, I have SONY equipment from over 12 years ago and it LOOKS and plays like BRAND NEW! I'm telling you the damn LCD's look brand new. Just to name a few of the products..a Sony VCR+ VCR, a Sony Dolby "pro logic" Receiver which is seriously HELLIFIED even though it's not dolby digital, this thing is the shit! And if this last product, which I may need to post a forum question about isn't something else..I don't know what is...I have a 5 disk Sony Carosel CD Player.

This thing PLAYS MP3 disks and was manufactuered in 1991!! lol...I had for a short period of time, a Sony standalone player, and that piece of shit wouldn't play these burned mp3's, but my 5 disk Sony Carosel plays them and MP3's weren't even a thought then...at least not for consumers! I have yet to find ANY TYPE of mp3 disk this player WON'T play, and the changer has DSP, Digital Signal Processing for reverb and that type of thing..and it's INCREDIBLE! I really don't honestly think ANY company makes products anywhere near the quality of these. Oh, and about my Sony DVD player....I sold it to some unsuspecting person on Ebay.

Don't get me wrong, they got what the ad said, but they have no clue about multiformat, etc..so i'm sure it will fit their needs. I do miss my damn remote control to that thing though..it was the most hellified remote
I've ever seen...GLOW IN THE DARK BUTTONS, JOG SHUTTLE...

the remote alone retails for $60, but I let it go with the DVD Player and got what seems to be the most Versatile DVD Player on the market..and that's the Philips 724 AT31. I got it with the money from my Sony, and this thing NEVER SKIPS, and I've said it before, I honestly believe it would play a pancake.

Anyway, the point is that SONY standalones SUCK in terms of multiformat, but everything else is top notch with Sony. That's why they are the company that introduced the WORLD's first multiformat red ray burner, such as the DRU500a I have, and they are the first to introduce the WORLD'S first blu-ray burner. Sony is the shit!

  9. You guys are entitled to your opinion, however it just so happens that I have the Sony DVP-NS715P and have a backup of Lethal Weapon II which I made with InstantCopy. I did not take out any of the extras, and it plays fine.
It is true that older Sony DVD players did not do well w/ dvd-r or vcds.. That simply isn't the case anymore. I couldn't be happier w/ my Sony DVD player, it has played absolutely everything I have thrown at it (VCDs, SVCDs, XVCds, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+r and DVD+RW).. it also plays mini-dvds.
The only thing I can think of is that by taking out the extras, something got messed up. Just try to make a 1:1 copy, and I'm sure that will work.

  10. I am going to try to make a 1:1 copy with DVDencryptor again. I have no clue why dvdencryptor goofed up. It ripped the movie fine and then when it went to burn the ISO it crapped out at ~60%. WTF

  13. Hmmm hear you say Sony make crap DVD players. I absolutly don't agree with you. All disc I ever have made have played in my Sony player. No matter what setting I used with nero or any other program. It's even play all DVDs with sticky labels even the first unbalanced labels I maid.

I haven't had the same luck with other player. Pioneer, Panasonic and LG player have either had problems whit nero setting and now they all have problems to playing some of my labeld dvds.

So I have to say that my Sony is the greatest DVD I have tested so far!

  14. I will not buy another pos Apex. They play everything but are cheap and annoying. The Apex 1200 I have was for SVCDs only but those are old now.

I want a DVD player as good as the Sony 715 without the "dirty disc" problem.

  15. I'm not gonna engage in a debate about Sony DVD Players because that isn't this particular topic. If anyone else wants to start a thread though, I'll be glad to input info.

    I will say this much..

    Sony DVP-NS715P
That's the piece of garbage I sold on Ebay because in would not play certain DVD-R or DVD+R, it doesn't claim to play those ANYWAY. Not to mention, it would skip on ALMOST ALL SVCD's. It did NOT PLAY CVD OR XVCD, at least not for me, and that is why I no longer own it. Do a search on THIS SITE under DVD PLAYERS and you will see the Philips 724 I own is the best. If others have Apex or other brands which play all formats, great...but I've read countless posts of Apex Crapping out within a year or so.

But back to the Sony DVD Players...I don't doubt you have certain media which seems to work for you, but I want a standalone that plays ALL MEDIA, or at the very least, MOST media and plays ALL formats. My Philips does just that. I know the Sony isn't even in the same league with this Philips because I owned that Sony and as I said before, I'm about as loyal a Sony User as can be.

I just need something with component output and optical output.

i gotta agree with defense. i'm glad that some people are getting lucky with their Sonys but it'll be a cold day in hell before I buy another Sony DVD player.

On the Apex, I have used mine many times a day for the past 6-8 months and so far so good. we'll see, but I have a second AD-1500 which I opened once to make sure it was okay which I keep in my closet for the day that my first one breaks down. At under $60 apiece, this was my solution.

oh yeah, the Sonys are a bit pricey with proportion to the other players on the market with similar features. (but we all know that about Sony, and I usually buy their products anyway becasue of their attention to design - again, I am talking about products other than DVD players)

  18. elqueso, I don't know what you mean by Philips is the "leet." But if you mean the best, well, if you consider it being able to play every format imaginable with no hitches, then yeah, it's the best. There may be some as good, but there can't be any better in terms of playing different formats. Another thing, if you think all you need is any dvd player that has an optical and progressive connections and you will be fine playing any of these formats mentioned, again, do some research on the dvd players section of this forum. That's what I did for EIGHT hours before purchasing this Philips.

One thing I will say that is VERY ODD is that Best Buy has lowered their price of this player to a mere $99! That's insane for a player like this, but I also noticed that this player doesn't say it support DVD-R or DVD+R or DVD-/+ RW in the supported formats section. It damn sure said it there when I bought mine and my book says it too. And boy does it ever support those formats. I'm just wondering WHY Best Buy would of manually taken out those supported format options. Very strage...be ware if you get this player from Best Buy or do a little more research to ensure these are the same quality players.

    @Drewson,

On the Apex, I have used mine many times a day for the past 6-8 months and so far so good. we'll see, but I have a second AD-1500 which I opened once to make sure it was okay which I keep in my closet for the day that my first one breaks down. At under $60 apiece, this was my solution.
Pretty damn smart for that price to have one waiting in the box brand new.

When I research something I don't just listen to one or two people, I have to hear SEVERAL people say the same thing, and I've done BOTH with Sony DVD Players, as well as Apex. Unfortunately, my research on the Sony came after I purchased it, but that's ok, I got almost full value for it and used the money for the philips. Apex are known to play all these formats, but unfortunatley, they are also known to break down within a years time. I hope yours last a long time though. That was the ONLY reason I didn't purchae an APEX by the way.
