at least I think its a RAM prob...

I generally save a bunch of webpages to CD every month or so; Howtos & such, gardening tips, astronomy pix, etc.
That part has always gone smooth, but lately when I dump them to CD, the estimated times get really 'astronomical'- yesterday I had one go up to '21 days 17 hours 6 minutes' altho it didn't take that long only hours...

I'm using an XP machine with a gig of RAM and plenty of headroom on the HD.
Big files aren't the problem; a passel of 6meg jpgs will still burn in a couple minutes.

This I guess has something to do with the jillion non-visible files that are now included in most webpages but what to do about it I dunno.

I'm using the built-in XP burner for this, but have run into it using the OEM DVD burner software too.

The machine itself has both internal CD and DVD burners.

I really don't know, but I have had similar problems when backing up data. If I remember correctly the problem had to do with multiple programs keeping secondary files in case I wanted top backup/restore. Norton keeps track of everything so that you can go back to some date and restore. Windows XP keeps track of everything so you can go back and restore. We don't really see all these backup precautions going on, but they are there. I even had a utility fix all type program making restore plans. I got rid of that "tools" program. Somehow your problem is probably related to mine and a result of hidden restore contingency programs going on in the background.

Just to add: It was the backup program I was using that had the problem dealing with restore issues. The backup program in XP and Norton Ghost gave me trouble. DOS utility type programs worked.

check your hardware's ide mode, sounds like the ide bus has been set to pio instead of dma. if so right click on the channel and remove it. reboot and windows will re-install it at the proper speed. it happens if the burners run into bad discs and report errors to windows.
