  1. I have an AVI video that I want to put on a dvd and have it play in dvd players. The problem is that it is bigger than 4.7 gigs. Is there one tool that will let me convert it and than compress it? Or do I need to use several tools?

  2. Use TmpGenc to convert to mpeg-2 format. Use a bitrate calculator (look in tools section) to find out what bitrate will allow it to fit on a DVD-r

TMPGEnc Plus will encode it to MPEG 2 for you. Cost $50 for the license for MPEG 2. Well worth it. Or you can TMPGEnc free with a 30 day MPEG 2 trial period.
May the force be with you.
