I just started burning vcd's a a few days ago, and thanks to the tutorials here, i've managed to figure out how to convert asf to avi, and avi to mpg. The only thing, which probably should be the most simple, is how to convert wmv to asf. Any help will be appreciated.

asf is wmv. simply rename your file from .wmv to .asf

  4. hahahaha jk. open up any folder and go to tools>folder options. go to view and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" then press ok. now you will notice that all your files have a .something after their name. then change your wmv file from example.wmv to example.asf

Ok...now that i've done that, none of the asf files that I changed from wmv will open with virtualdub 1.3. It keeps popping up a message that says something about not having a decompressor to open 'WMV1', 'WMV2', and MP4S'.....what do I do now?

  7. I believe VirtualDub 1.3c can do ASF but not WMV (even if you have converted the extension from WMV to ASF). However, TMPGEnc can convert ASF to MPEG (and you can convert the extension from WMV to ASF and it will work).

asf tools 3.1 will convert it to avi
or you can get stoik video convertor at www.stoik.com which will convert it to whatever
or you can download windows media encoder from microsoft which will make it into a wmv that tmpgenc can handle or you can use windows movie maker which will make it into a wmv that tmpgenc can handle after you change the name to asf.
