Hello everyone-I have some Hi8 video shot with a wide angle adapter that vignettes the corners of the frames. I know there are a specific number of lines that needs to be cropped to fit specific MPEG formats. I want to crop theses files, probably with VirtualDub, I have Ulead VS6, but it only crops by percentages and doesn't seem to work with whole clip. Can anyone tell me where I might find this cropping information?
Thanks in advance-Ron B

I'm not giving up the search for the highest possible quality video files made with an aging computer. I plan to substitute skill for hardware. I didn't find out about the cropping, but while I was looking, I learned how to use batch conversion with TMPGEnc and found a frameserver from Ulead VideoStudio 6 to TMPGEnc. Also, after using it a couple weeks, I found the trial version of DVDWorkshop about equal in features to the full version of MovieFactory. I can't afford DVDWorkshop now, the full version must be pretty cool. Maybe I'll go check out SpruceUp.

the best post editing program is avisynth, crops like a dream. it's free with good documentation. little difficult to use as it's all text based. if you know how to write a script no problem, if not, you'll learn!!!
it's the best there is!!"The software said Win XP or better, so I Installed Linux" -

Hello again-Thanks for your replies. I have seen somewhere; in order to keep the aspect ratio or something, when you crop video frames, it has to be done in multiples of 6 or 14 (lines), not exactly sure of the exact factor, or when the video is re-encoded to an MPEG format, it may cause some distortion or some quality loss. I think this formula is different for TV and VGA. I realize this may be splitting hairs, but if a simple setting will make a better video, I'm for it.

Hello again cropping fans-I believe that excessive or improper cropping, can cause horizontal bar distortion that could easily be diagnosed as incorrect field order. With identical MPEG2 clips, captured and cropped with the same program, produced with the same TMPGEnc template, displayed this distortion. The effect is very pronounced, unwatchable, on a television(all the videos are interlaced). Field order A and B were no different. The original source tape is Hi8.

I was wondering why you bumped the post 5 days after your last post ?.
However you wont be able to bring it up to my standards in such a short time
But this might help

Hello again-The reason I responded five days later is because I'm working on a problem, hoping someone else may have the same problem and we could share information.
You know, I deal mainly with folks who make original videos and films. When you try new things, you encounter unique problems, that's why I ask questions that unfortunately, are boring to some. What I would suggest, is when you see something you aren't interested in, don't read or resond to it. Seems pretty simple.
To balance out my assinine questions(in your opinion), please note that I don't say anything about the experts who seem to spend most of their time figuring out how to steal(I believe you call it ripping) copyrighted movies to make crappy VCDs.
Sorry to the other forum users, usually I try not to respond like this. If you are interested in Century W/A adapters, including the 16:9 for the new Sony PDX10, VX series and the Panasonic AG-DVX100 and the resulting images, send me a message and we'll talk about. -

It is customary to discus further what you had been told, disagree even.. But ignore and go of on a tangent NO ! So nobody else replied, I wonder why ?. Then 5 days later you come back with more information, that I am sure you thought would be very interesting, but I responded with some smiles, which you don't seam to understand either ?
They were meant as a joke, you know something funny, or don't you have a sense of humour either ? Because your reply was just plain rude. Had you inserted some smiles I guess I would have just laughed it off to.

If you think that people in this forum are nothing but thieves, then you had better leave now, or got thrown out !! As I think I speak for most people who don't like to be called thieves because they have a hobby like this.
I am wondering why you ever come here in the first place, and since we are all thieves, why you stay ?

Common guys....I found this post very helpful...then mister smileyface had to try to be cute....your smileyface post was not needed....and just because one posts to their original post does not mean one is trying to bump up .....it makes things less confusiing to keep the posts in one logical location...if you have nothing constructive to say then move on...and yes the original posters reply to you was harsh....I fully understood his anger....
On to more important things....
Now Im trying to crop out a segment of a VHS tape I have that has a time counter on the bottom and a black border at the top (not sure of the pixil size yet) but the sides are fine..what would be the best way to go about cropping this tape? eventually I will be putting this to DVD-r..and I capture/transfer via firewire (Dazzle Hollywood) can use a PCI capture if I have to..I have Vdub and TmpgEnc on hand (dont we all....)
Thanks \Mike Cossey
