  1. Hi there! I'm working on getting three mp2's ready for dvd authoring.. I just recently finished encoding all their audio tracks to ac3, and have been muxing them today using TMPGEnc.. Here's the trouble: It worked perfectly on my first two files, and on my third (the big one - it's an 80 minute movie) it gives an error when I select the appropriate ac3 for it.. "File can not open, or is unsupported." I wondered if the ac3 file (which is like 270mb) might be corrupt, but I ran ac3fix on it and there were no errors. So I don't expect anyone to know what's wrong, but how about some suggestions on another Mux program that might work? I messed with Xmuxer a bit and it seemed to be working, but the output file that came from me trying to join my original video with ac3 had NO SOUND.. So I guess Xmuxer doesn't support ac3? It accepted the file, though! Odd. Anyway, if anyone could point me to a good mux program besides TMPGEnc or Xmuxer, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Sounds like your AC3 is corrupt in some way. You could always try re-converting it. That leads to the next question.

Why are you bothering to convert your MP2 to AC3? You gain nothing, as MP2 is a DVD compliant format. Converting to AC3 will not improve the quality in any way, and gains you nothing.

  3. Hi there, and thanks for all your responses too. I've pretty much decided that, after talking to ya in our other thread, but I guess I am doing it just so I can say that the DVD has "Dolby Digital sound!" I'll be selling these DVDs when completed, and was thinking it would be good extra selling ploy - It sounds good and many people don't know what it is. That's really the only reason, since now I know that it won't make an mp2 (noticably) smaller.. As far as the ac3 being corrupt, unless ac3fix doesn't work.. Like say I analyzed it with that and it was fine. You wouldn't by any chance know why all my ac3s end up sounding softer than the wavs they were created from, would you? I never changed any settings when converting, but just made sure that it was set at 48000Hz, 384kbps..

Softer, as in muted, or just lower in volume? Also, what software are you using to convert from MP2 to AC3?
