  1. O.K.
I own both of the above items.

Question #1:On the back of the DRM-E30 there is what looks like a small
    cooling fan.
Does this thing always run?? Only run when the machine heats up??
When it does run does it make any noise?? I don't hear this thing doing
anything but I do think I feel some cool air when I put my hand by it.

Question #2:Made some VHS to DVD-R dubs for a friend. The friend has the same
Panasonic dvd player as I have listed above.
On all 3 discs the picture goes to hell(blocking, artifacts, audio
    break-up,etc...) about 45 to 50 minutes in.
I bought the discs home and played it on the same Panasonic unit at the same
    points with no problems.
Also tried it on my Playstation 2 and on an older RCA unit that really
shouldn't play any type of DVD-R.
    They played great.
Any thoughts why two identical players would not play the same disc the same
    way??

  2. Yes it is a cooling fan unit.

Heat notice in manual says to not place dmr-e30 on top of other equipment which gets hot.

Apparently the high end of the operating temp range is 104.

I have never heard the fan run if at all when recording 10-12 hours in a row.

I cannot tell any air is moving through it at all now.

So I would say you are experiencing normal conditions.
