I just installed a Verbatim 48x16x24 drive (said "12x" on the box but "16x" on the product). Purchased this at OfficeMax

It works fine with the included Nero, but I still want to use some older applications like WinOnCD 3.8 which asks for a brand name and model. Obviously, Verbatim isn't a choice.

Anyone know who makes this drive?

If you haven't already, look on the drive itself for any/all model numbers and do a search on the web. Also, during bootup watch the bios screens and see if make and model is identified there. Lastly check Nero and Device manager to see make and model. Chances are one of them will give you the true manufacturer and model number.

I looked around on the web a little for you and it looks like there is a good chance it is either a Lite-On or an Optorite. Lite-On has been around for a while, gets good reviews and puts out a quality product. I have two of them and the work great.

Optorite, I don't know much about the company. I got an IOMagic 48x 16x 48x the day after Thanksgiving at Circuit City for $20 AR. It was a relabelled Optorite. It's resonably quiet, so far I've burned about 30 CDs on it and it hasn't given me any problems.
