Usually the desktop drives have a 7200 spin with a 16mb cache. I have the new Verbatim Acclaim, it's all I need, fast and secure, 7 year warranty, USB powered, and it's the smallest portable hard drive to date

its a 7200rpm drive so if connected via esata then it will be as fast as internal. if connected via usb2 then it might as well be a 4200rpm 5.25 drive.
ESATA is up to 6x faster than USb2.0
1.5tb is about the sweet spot for HDD right now.

The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.
