This is a fairly simple question, but I've been having problems tracking down a good answer.

I have source files that are slightly smaller than DVD rez (690x460). I would like to convert these to a format that will work on my DVD player (Daewoo 5800). Can I convert these up to 720x480? Will XVCD/XSVCD support this res? I'd rather not use 352x480 or 480x480 if possible.

If this IS possible, which authoring software would you suggest?

  2. The X in XVCD and XSVCD basically denotes it is non-standard and so not a true (S)VCD. As the resolution you are suggesting is NOT VCD or SVCD resolution then the answer to your question is Yes, you can make these X(S)VCD's at this resolution. As to wether it will play on your DVD player, thats another question!

  3. I have the 5800 (3 actually) and I have done a non compliant SVCD at 704x480 at 6000 bitrate and it plays perfect and looks great, DVD quality, make sure to use the SVCD setting on Nero and burn as Non-compliant, have tried 7000 bitrate but would skip sometimes, 6000 holds up perfect this will also play in a Sampo 631CF also. Just keep in mind that 90% of the players out there will not play a XSVCD you make at these type of settings, by the way if you noticed, 5800's will not play DVD-R's, if you put the 5700 Firmware in they will then play DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+RW's.

Thanks for the nfo. Usually I hear about 'non-compliant' SVCD in the areas of bitrate, not resolution.

Just so I have this straight... one can author a disc that is setup with either VCD or SVCD format (ie directory layouts, etc) using a non-compliant (rez and/or bitrate) video file? I realize that there may be limitations for non-standard discs in console DVD players.

Aside from Nero, does anybody know of authoring software that will allow non-compliant video files to be used? Ideally a program that supports both menus and chapters. I've had problems with VCDEasy and non-standard rez, and I'm looking at TSCV now. Any other suggestions are appreciated.

    Thanks again.
