  1. Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if they had any quality issues when playing SVCDs on the Pioneer models above. Alot of people say it dosn't display 480,480 properly, which would kinda suck. Does it play pal on NTSC TVS? And does it have left, right selection for VCDs with 2 audio languages?

    Thanks.

  2. the reason they don't display properly is because people don't always encode properly. part of this is due to bugs in TMPG 12c/d, ATI, and Dazzle, but can be easily fixed with the 'fix12c.exe' program. (i've written this several times, search the forums for posts by me containing 'fix12c' and 'display' and 'pioneer')

  3. Just got my 343, and use 12h or 12beta to encode. The only thing with 480x480 is the right hand side of the TV screen will have a slightly larger black border than the left side, which quite honestly I didn't even notice at first. It's really not a problem.

I imagine this keeps the image somewhat sharper, as its not being stretched, but the difference is probably negligible.

If the border bothers you, encode in 352x480, which is what I do anyway - there is no noticeable difference in quality.

i don't have black borders on either side. make sure you picked your aspect ratios and arrange methods right. i did get borders when i told TMPG it was a 4:3 source by accident. and just do 1:1 source, 'show at center' (i think), and 4:3 output ratio.

  5. and to the original post, yes, i think it plays PAL on NTSC tv, and will also play NTSC Film (23.97 fps). and it does have L/R controls to choose one side only. in SVCD you can have multiple stereo soundtracks, but since i haven't tried that, i can't say if it works or not, but it appears to have that function

  6. I can't comment on 480x480 because I hardly make those - but my 434 plays my 352x240 and 352x480 xSVCD's just fine - I have no complaints about the quality.

It will play both PAL and NTSC VCD's on an NTSC TV.

My most recent stuff has actually been NTSC Film at 352x480 --- but like I said it plays it all.

Do what patrickm says in TMPGEnc set source to 1:1 and output to 4:3 ... with full screen (keep aspect ratio) and you'll be fine.

  7. I have the Pioneer 434 and it plays perfectly either from TMPeg or Dazzle II output. I guess some people do things wrong.

  8. I have a 343 and I'm making SVCD's from voyager episodes i'm downloading from internet.

I just convert the AVI to MPEG2 with the same AVI resolution and never get any problens.

The only thing I do is select FULL SCREEN in "video arrange method" on TMPGENC. I have SVCD with 352x240, 304x224, 640x480, 480x306... Even mixed resolutions on the same SVCD, like the first episode in 304x224 and the second in 480x360 on the same SVCD.

Never get any problem in my Pioneer DV343.

The problem is never the pioneer player, they are great and play any type of disc under the SUN.

I make tons of SVCD's and VCD's and they play PERFECTLY on the DV-343. For the older DV333, there was that TMPG 12c/d problem but the DV343 doesn't display the same problem. That is, it'll play things encoded with 12c/d perfectly too!

The best way to make an MPEG2 file in TMPGENc for SVCD is to choose 1:1 and Center. I tried all of the other keep aspect ration etc etc and it just caused problems. I have played my SVCDs on a Pioneer 333, 343, and an Apex 600A. The only thing I have against the Pioneer is that it doesn't display time elapsed and remaining on the SVCD like the Apex does.
