what is better? if space is not an issue will the wav file give me better sound? or does it really not matter?

If you have a raw clean source PCM is much better. But if your source is AC3 rencoding it in PCM will not help the quality. If you have a lo-quality source AC3 is better. If you have a high quality source, then PCM is better.
But I guess it all depends on if you can even tell the difference. Like I perfer uncompressed video over DVD. But I can only tell the difference if the source is raw.
