  1. I am trying to convert a file that was nominally listed as an .mpeg, but every time I bring it up with TMPGEnc it crashes the application with an 'illegal operation' error. When EO Video also refused to convert the file, I ran it through Mpegprop which told me that the file was not an .mpeg stream at all. So I tested it out with AVICodec which told me that the file was actually an .asf that uses the MP42 video codec. I have used both EO Video and TMPGEnc to convert .asf files in the past and cannot understand why it won't work this time. The file plays just fine on my Media Player with the exception that I can't use the slider to move to different sections of the video.

This web site has already helped me out immensely and any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

    three ways to do it
    change extension to .asf
then download windows media encoder from microsoft.com
    encode file to wmv
change extension to .asf and run in tmpgenc
(this works every time for me)

download asf tools 3.1 available here i think
do basic repair and or advanced repair
then convert to avi in asf tools
( i lose audio some times with this.)

download avicc (known as 4cc changer) and change header to divx
(this works for a lot of people)

  3. VirtualDub 1.3c converts ASF to AVI also. If you can't use the slider, you may need to re-index the file first (ASFindex).
