Anyone can help me for the following conversions:
    1) DivX/Xvid .avi file (1280 x 720 resolution) to .asf file
    2) mkv file, same resolution, to .asf file
My standalone DVD player can play only DVD video, DivX with DVD resolution or MPEG4/.asf files!

Convert to divx avi with xvid4psp instead. Use 720x576 or lower resolution.

Well, I know it's always possible to get a worst resolution...but I have got a lot of .avi and .mkv 720p movies, that work pretty well on the PC, but if I would play those HD movie on a 720 lines TV set? No DVD player can do the job? No hope to use that .asf format, almost unknown to me? (isn't it a sort of streaming format?).

    Hello.
Can you upload a small sample somewhere. Don't want to start heading in the wrong direction.
    Happy to have a look.

Well, the smallest of the 720p .avi files I got is 3.6 GB size... It's not a SMALL sample. I should in some way to "cut" a little portion of the file. Which tool do you suggest to do that and what size do you need for a test?
Anyway, in the "guide" section of the forum, I have found the following tip:
    www.digital-digest.com/articles/AVI_to_WMV_Xbox_360_Conversion_Guide_page1.html
It's intended for Xbox, but the output format is the same: could it work for a player that reads .asf files? (isn't .wmv the video format of the .asf container?)

    Waaaay too big.

    Absolutely true. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/format/asfspec.aspx

I've not used the the technique described. I am NOT a fan of K-Lite.
I read a lot of the comments following the article and, by and large, people seem happy with the method.

These might help you make a decision..

    Slightly older post.http://forum.notebookreview.com/archive/index.php/t-33200.html

Were it me, I'd back up my system and give it a go.
I keep my operating system lean. 9 minutes for a backup and 6 minutes for a restore.
