Did you choose vcd on nero. it sounds like maybe you didn't tell nero you are burning a vcd. Of this is the prob then look at the burning guides and it will tell you exactly how to burn a vcd with nero.

Umm, there should be a huge dat file on the CDR when you finish. Did you try playing in your stand alone DVD player???

Make sure you did not turn off the VCD standards when using NERO.
You will end up with a dat file under file name MPEGAV.
Your VCD will only automatically play when played on a DVD player that has the ability to play VCD's or a Video MPEG Output card in your computer.
You can use windows media player to play back the dat file, but is a little tricky to do so, or if want to see if your DAT file is encode correctly.
Just copy the DAT file onto your computer hard drive and rename the DAT extension to MPG. Double click on it and media player should play back that MPEG no problem. -
Am getting exactly that (MPEGAV). How can i make sure that I have the VCD standards on. please help .

I'm also having some problems playing, but not sure if it's the same here. I'm converting with TMPGEnc ver. Beta 12i. Everything is fine with the converison. Load mpeg-1 to Nero and preview...looks fine. Burn onto CD-RW. No errors. The CD plays in my Sony, but no pictures or sound...again, no errors. I copied the .dat file over to my pc and renamed to .mpg file. WMP (6.4.09.1109) tries to open, but I the following error:
Some of the streams in this movie are in an unsupported format. (Error=00040242)
Any ideas? -
indie, I'm using a CompUSA brand cdrw. I've downloaded a mpeg movie today and burned it on the same cd and it works, so I don't think it's the cd or Nero. There must be something that has to do with my original mpeg or TMPG (settings?). The original mpeg's are from a Sony 505V digital camera. BTW, after I burned the VCD and watched it on my Sony 530D, I brought it back to my computer and opened the .dat file with WMP and it worked! This tells me that if the .dat file does not work with WMP, it probably won't work in a DVD player. Now, I just need to figure out why my mpegs don't work when they get converted to .dat
