  1. Hi. I recently tested out ripping a music video trying to make a test VCD. Everything went fine in the CD burning proccess, but for some reason, the disc wouldn't play in my DVD drive. It seemed like I did everything the guide I have (from dvdrippingguides.com) said to do, but it still didn't play. I then came back to my computer and tried it out in my DVD-ROM, and to my shock, it worked just fine! I could play the video in PowerDVD and everything! Anyone know why that is? To my best guess I can only assume that I'll need a DVD burner to write to a DVD-R in order for it to play in my normal DVD Player. Am I right? Or did I just miss something during the burning proccess that would have made the normal CD-R VCD play in my DVD player?

it might be that your dvd player cannot play either cd-r, cd-rw, or vcd.

  3. Yes, you can play VCDs (video recorded in standard CD-R) in *compatible* DVD player. Check your DVD manual to see if it's compatible. Mine's a Panasonic RV-31 and it plays DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD, CD-R, CD-RW and VCDs. It also plays VCDs with SVCD format (only with the header modified as a VCD). Cannot play Mini-DVD (DVD format recorded in a stardard CD-R) or standard SVCD.

  4. Yes, looking at the manual, it's just that my DVD Player isn't compatible for CD-Rs Thanks for the help though. At least I know I didn't do anything wrong or miss anything in making the disc itself. Oh well. There's still DVD-ROM for now

    TRY CD-RW,

I have a Sony 300? system/wdvd and it will not read any CD-R media I tried, but it will read and play VCD, audioCD, dtsaudio etc. on CD-RW media. There may be other players that can read rewriteable media but not CD-R.

  6. Does anyone know if a standalone DVD player can be hacked, not to be multi region, but to play CDRs and, more importantly, VCDs and SVCDs? (I have an LG2280P and there are no cracks of any sort that I can find.) The manual says it can only play retail DVDs and audio CDs. Very frustrating. Looks like I may have to output to tape just to be able view footage on the TV, after all.

I'd guess the ability to read CD-R/RW is connected with what DVD reader the DVD is fitted with. So, it's a hardware thing and can't be hacked, if you aren't brave enough to replace the reader with some other CD-R capable reader!

It seems like a CD-RW is more like a manufactured CD than a CD-R, so if CD-R wont work, then CD-RW still might.

VCD/SVCD capability is more of a firmware thing, and might be possible to change with hack/firmware update.

  8. Trying CD-Rs with different dyes can help too.

  9. Thanks Epo and Mats. I think I'll give the CDRW a go.
