I'm working with a couple of longer movie pieces, and finally using the cleaner 5 demo, I am able to identify that they are mp43 types. Now does that mean they were encoded into .Avi using that? When labeled as AVI's they are playable though win media player, but no matter what extension, they wont play in DiVX 5 player.

What can/should i use to convert these to mpeg or mpeg 2?

And am i actually converting from mp4 or from avi?

this file has me very confused.

yes MP43 is divx3 but to get them to work you need to the AVI four CC code and then you will easily get it to work.
To do this I got a free little programme from www.divx.com called AviC(fourCC Changer).
You open your file , change the first line to DIV3 , and the second line to DIV4 and click apply.
That's it. Straight into TMPGenc in the normal way.
