Not sure which section to place this in?

My problem is this, I have some .xba files which will play on a computer with an associated 'PC Player' software.

What I want to do, is convert the .xba files to a format which can be played on a (standalone) DVD player.

    Can this be done?

    Thanks in advance

.xba is a new one on me. drop it in gspot and see what it comes up with.

what made the file, what plays the file?

    copy protected? copywrited material?

.xba is a 'video' file created by surveillance cameras distributed by such companies as Petards (http://www.petards.net/en-gb/default.aspx)

To playback the video, their own 'player' is used.

I need to convert some .xba files as mentioned above but I don't know if it is possible

try renaming the extension from .xba to .avi and see what gspot can come up with. they may just rename another file type.

Tried renaming to .avi and .mpg and neither would play. I tried both in GSPOT and it says FILE TYPE UNKNOWN, MIME TYPE UNKNOWN.

I think I'm stuck with the .xba!!

So far, this is what I have found out about the xba file format:

File Type Proprietary ".xba", convertible [with password] to AVI

File Name Optional file text plus date/time, for example:"Bus0034 2004 month 08 day
    16 12_30_00. xba"

File Size 10 min or 1 hour

File Protection Write-protection via file menu; optional automatic write-protection of alarm recordings

    That's about right Midzuki!

It is from 'law enforcement'! If it can be converted to .avi, the question is how, and where would a password be found?

the store or business owner would most likely be the one given the password when he bought the system.

I think that's probably right. I don't think they would want anyone converting the files created by their 'systems'. My company bought a lot of equipment from them, the 'captured video' of which, is saved as a .xba file.
Rather than use 'their' software to playback on a PC only, I wanted to convert it to play on a DVD.
    It's all above board!!

If you can view xba files on your PC, then yes you can save them into other formats ---
BUT it will take some time and some effort :-(

I mean, if I were you, I would be using ZD Soft Screen Recorder (or FRAPS ?)
to capture and re-encode your XBAs. Yesterday I downloaded a "protected"
QuickTime video that yes can be viewed only inside a web browser window, so I
had to use Screen Recorder in order to save it as a 3ivx AVI(tomorrow or later
I will tweak it with AviSynth and transform it into an MPEG-2). Hope this helps.

Thanx Midzuki, I have tried 'screen capture' using SNAGIT but the quality didn't appear to be very good!

If SNAGIT (which I have never used) is capable of lossless compression,
I think you won' t find any quality loss after the format conversion.

Does anyone know of any players that will allow .XBA file? i'm havin some trouble viewing some CCTV footage.

  14. Hi there.

XBA will only play in the manufacturer's software, period.

The software itself has the function to export to .avi (with or without password). If you have purchased this equipment then you will have the software. If by some chance you don't have the software, but are a geniune customer, then the manufactureer will send you a copy and/or refer you to one of their distributors (for example Petards).

The only other way is to integrate the manufacturer's video codec into your own apps using their Software Development Kit (SDK) - this is only available to partners (not distributors as above).

Hope that helps, let me know
