what can authoring tools do what dvd-writing tools cannot?

I've been succesfully transferring any type of mpeg2 file to dvd+rw with sony dru500a and playing it on denon 2500 using ulead dvd powertools / sonic mydvd.
But when I prefab all the necessary files on my hd (vob,ifo,bup) and I burn them (on the same disk) with nero, instant dvd or imgtools I end up with a disk that makes my denon say "PLAY" and "STOP" within 1 second.

I did do the getVTS sector trick with IfoEdit.
The files DO play with powerDVD.

What might I be overlooking here?

Some DVD players require that the "VIDEO_TS" directory that you burn be in capitol letters. Seems a minor point but I know from expierence it's all to true.
