Hi!
could anyone tell me if you can use different resolution for dvd, for intance I have a xvid movie which is 640 by 352, can I encode a mpeg2 to this resolution! or will this cause problems playing back on a standalone dvd player! or do I have to stick to the standared resolutions!

Your confusing resolution with framesize.
Your DVD probobly allows 352x240, 352x480, 480x480, 528x480, 702x480, and 720x480 for a framesize.
Just pick one of these, and then use "full-frame (keep aspect ratio)", and the widescreen video will fill the screen like you want.

480x480 and 528x480 are not "legal" DVD framesizes and will not import into DVD authoring software.
