Can someone explain or direct me to a thread that helps explain what is going on when you are capturing screen shots from a DVD. I have a friend who asked me how to get full-size "full resolution" screen shots off a DVD. He said he tried WinDVD but at full screen it gives him half or quarter resolution captures. I had no clue so I did some searching and figured to tell him just use PowerDVD or VLC like everyone recommends in the sticky thread, but after trying to understand what governs the resolution of a DVD screen capture, I became confused. It seems that the size and settings of the monitor would ultimately decide the resolution of the picture. Is there any way to strip a frame from a DVD independent of a monitor? Thanks for the help and knowledge guys and gals.

in powerdvd if you select full resolution you get the resolution of the video not the screen. ntsc dvd screenshots come out as 720x480 pixel jpgs if you use that format.

aedipuss is correct that the screen cap you are getting is 720x480 resolution for NTSC dvd. While your monitor is most likely set to something like 1024x768 to 1280x1024 or even higher. Making the screen cap image appear smaller when viewed at its normal size - because it is. Put simply, when you view it Fullscreen on your monitor you are seeing a 'stretched' image if your screen is set to a higher resolution. Hope this helps.

Are you saying that 720x480 is the highest resolution that standard DVD's put out? Just out of curiosity, what is it for Blue-Ray? Also how does the resolution, like 720x480 correlate to the 1080i/p thing. I believe DVD's are 480p like old PS2 games. Thanks for all the responses.

720x480 is dvd spec, blu-ray max 1920x1080 so powerdvd could cap at that resolution if you wanted. HD is about 4 times the screen size of SD in pixels.
