Here is a question I'm not sure where to post so I'll start here.
If I rip a DVD and convert it to svcd format can I then author a dvd-r with each of the svcd files as a chapter?

SVCD format is not valid for DVD and you cannot burn SVCD to DVD media. There is a gude on this site (under authoring I think) on how to get SVCD video onto DVD-r but it is not compatible with all players.

Thanks Bugster,
I think I've figured it out. Tell me if this sounds right:
rip to hard drive (smart ripper)
convert to avi (DVD2AVI)
reconvert back to dvd format (TMPGEnc w/VFAPI and Chapter-X-Tractor)
author a new dvd-r (VCDEasy, DVDit,etc.)
Sounds simple but I know there are a number of steps involved. Do you or anyone else know an easier way? -
There are plenty of other ways. You certainly do not need to convert to an avi first (I mad this mistake when I started out too!). The method I use now is very similiar to the one posted here:

at least I use this guide as far as ripping is concerned, I encode with TmpGenc in the same way as the guide uses CCE (just change the settings in DVD2SVCD appropriatley). Then I author with Spruce. There are plenty of other guides on the subject of ripping DVD to DVD-r if you look around.
