  1. Just picked up the Sony 500A. Managed to author a disk in MyDVD and began some tests. The DVD+RW and the DVD-RW worked without a hitch.

The DVD+RW was the media included in the box. The -RW is from Memorex. Those both worked fine with no problems.

When I moved to the +R and the -R all I get is coasters. I burned a -R with the same session in MyDWV as the RW's and got a failure right at the end. The DVD will load up in a player but won't play the videos. After a second try with the same result on -R I wrote the DVD out to the hard drive for Nero (5.5.9.14). Then I tried the -R and the +R both failed in Nero.

The MyDVD would get all the way to the end and then die off. Nero however broke right at the start. I didn't print the -R error out but the +R error has:

    #34 CDR -1066 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 1441
    Invalid field in command
    #35 TRANSFER -24 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 1441
Could not perform end of Disc-At-Once
    #36 Phase 38 File dlgbrnst.cpp Line 1571
    Burn process failed at 2.5x (3,450 KB/s)

The +R media is TDK - it also says it is 1x-2.5x compatable. Nero only allowed me to select 2.5x on the speed. MyDVD was stuck on Auto for speed tests.

    The -R media is Memorex (R R4.7)

I only had one +R disk to try in MyDVD. I'll pick up a couple more today to see if it will work in MyDVD.

    Any suggestions?

  3. One more thing... did nero 5.5.9.14 see and name the drive? Did you burn a DVD+/-RW with nero? I'll download it tonight and give a shout how things work when i get home from work.

  4. For what's it's worth here's my weekend roundup on my DRU500a.

The DVD+RW that came w/ the drive works like a charm. Writes at 2.5x in about 22mins. I've rewritten it at least 10 times without one problem.

I bought a sample pack of media online to test the unit. I haven't had enough time to test all of them out yet but here is what I've come up with so far. I used Nero (w/ latest patch) exclusively. Eventhough the Nero website says the drive isn't supported yet it recognizes the drive and it works perfectly.

Princo DVD-RW: Drive does not even recognize the media.
Accu DVD-R: Worked perfectly. Played in my Sony S300 and my Panasonic DVD-LA95.
Optodisk DVD-R: No write errors but could not be played in my Sony S300.
Generic 2x DVD-R: Worked perfectly in both players and took twice as fast to write. Too bad the media is so expensive. Worked in both my players.

I have a couple of other brand DVD-R but haven't tested them yet. Since the Accu worked like a charm I just ordered 100 of them since they are also very cheap

  6. I'm 100% happy with it!!!

    DVD-R @ 4x w/ future media (2x comfirmed)
    DVD-RW @ 2x
    DVD+R @ 2.4x
    DVD+RW @ 2.4x
    CD-R @ 24x

Nothing is faster (at the moment) and a great price what more could you ask for?

  7. Got my problem solved. It's the type of media for sure...

Bought Sony DVD-R (ver 2.0) and Nero saw it as 2x and it burned without a problem. So it's a just a matter of the disk being detected by the burner I guess.

Memorex DVD-R / TDK DVD+R were my problems.

Thanks all. I'll be on the look out for that Accu brand too.

  9. Whats so great about is the fact that my ass won't be having to wait over 30 min's for a dvd to burn! And 4x media is due out in November and pricing should be around same price as current media if not cheaper.

  10. I could not get a succesful burn with any memorex media with my DRU-500A. So far i have used Verbatum and TDK dvd-r media, and burned fine.

  11. Has anyone tried this drive specifically with the Ritek 2x DVD-r Media listed on Hypermicro.com advertised as 50 disks for 56.50?

I have bought SCSI stuff from HyperMicro before with zero problems, and a lot of the vendors listed on pricewatch advertise misleading prices..

    Thanks in advance!

  13. I also had a problem with TDK DVD+R media.
It burned fine - no errors. But the disk won't play back - even in the
Sony DRU500A drive that burned it. DVD player just churns for a while
    and stops.

Just bought the drive at CompUSA and I can second most of the above. Princo DVD-RW from meritline not recognized, and I have 25 of them, brand new. If anyone wants a good deal, let me know and we'll work out a price on them. Included Sony DVD-RW writes like a champ with Nero x.x.x.14. Studio 8 also recognizes the drive, but so far have only used Nero to burn. Will post more as results accumulate. Overall impression so far is quite positive. Replaced the DVD-R/RAM drive that came with my Gateway. They could not understand the problem with the drive when I told them it would not burn DVD-RWs. Oh, well!

  15. When I bought the DRU500A I bought a bunch of the various types of
DVD media... Not sure why I picked TDK. I was in a hurry, there was only
one DRU500 left in the display case...

The strange thing is that I burned a TDK DVD-RW just fine, but a
TDK DVD+R had problems like I described in previous post.
I've also burned a few TDK DVD-R disks without any problems.
