  1. I need to produce a advertising clip. The customer is American, so the VHS-Video has to be in NTSC.

I am in Germany and I have a Software to produce NTSC Movies. Can I record the movie on a normal PAL VHS cassette? The video recorder also says VHS (PAL). Or do I need to buy a special NTSC VHS cassette and recorder?

Quick short answser would be great!!

    Thanks

  2. in short, yes. i travel to denmark for the summer, and i we rent a vcr that can play pal and ntsc, however i believe you would have to order a vcr from the us, maybe get a signal converter, and record it that way, u will also have to buy ntsc vhs tapes. If i'm wrong please let me know, I am giving you advice based on what i know.

Yep you need a NTSC video recorder or a dual standard one which is capable of recording true NTSC.

You can use the same tapes as used in the uk but they won't last the same amount of time as UK cassetes. NTSC machines operate faster therefore you loses about 20% of the recordind time which you get on a PAL casseste.

Do you have to produce an NTSC video or can an NTSC VideoCD or DVD-R / SVCD do?

  4. Yes, it has to be NTSC Video. How to create a DVD or a Video-CD (MPEG etc.) I know. But there are often customers that have no computer or DVD-Player. Thats why.

Last question: My Video-Card has an normal output for a computer monitor and an output for a TV. If I play a NTSC-Video in full-screen, lets say in Win Media Player, will the video card output NTSC? Or do I even need a new video card that will output NTSC?

    Thanks for the good answers.

You need you vid-card to output NTSC and that MAY require a new card. Many cards are designed to operate in both modes, it's just a matter of finding the right setting or installing the right drivers.

  6. Thanks, I'll try my best.

If anyone can tell me more, do so! Perhaps someone had the same problem. Would be great to here more voices.

  7. well i copied movies from the tv (in USA) on cheap VHS tapes and took them to germany while i studied there during the past two years. they played with no problem on the german VHS machine cuz it had both systems in it.

i was told not all the older "german/european" VHS models have both systems, but most of the newer ones do. i also know that i continued to tape movies (in germany) in PAL onto those same tapes, but upon returning i had to bring them to a video editting store and have him convert them into NTSC. of course the quality dropped significantly but i only needed it for language.

without the conversion the signal sometimes garbles sound, distorts image so its unrecognizable, or may just alter the colour into B&W. in all cases, its impossible to watch a PAL signal on NTSC machines. PAL players are available in the US for lots of cash, or a signal transformer is available starting around 100USD. i suppose the more expensive the machine, the better the resolution/transfer of data. but here are some links to the transfer machinees: www.focusenhancements.com, www.cir.com/pc/tvator/tvator.htm

i hope i didnT give "warez" - i have no idea what that means

  8. i also have a problem with NTSC and PAL signals. i worked on a couple projects in germany with other people. i taped in NTSC and they in PAL. after much effort, we finally transferred the PAL data to my MAC (G4). i had to render all the footage. but when i tried to convert it to NTSC or to transfer it back to my camera, the system locks up each time. i am workign with Final Cut Pro 2 - any ideas?

I also recieved a CD of the footage in AVI format but its still 25fps. same thing happens when i try to transfer the data back to my camera - freezes the system.
